It’s Giving Tuesday – that one day of the year when we’re encouraged to do good by giving a gift to organizations that will help transform our community. This Giving Tuesday I am asking you to help us raise $25,000 to support mental health & suicide prevention through equine-assisted therapy. My name is Jamie, I’m an Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran, my organization is Quantum Leap Farm and this is my story…
I served in the 101st Air Division during the Iraq invasion in 2003 with a total of seven deployments. My unit was one of the first in and we had to do things I wish I could forget. While on patrol I lost friends in fire-fights and helicopter crashes and I was injured in an unexposed ordnance explosion. I was lucky to make it home and didn’t deploy again after that.
Earlier this year my wife and I were struggling with some serious medical issues. She was diagnosed with cancer and I was experiencing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury – it was all too much to manage and I felt like I was drowning. It was then I heard about Quantum Leap Farm’s Warrior Mission: At EASE retreats and my wife knew it was what I needed. Although I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my bubble or my wife during her cancer treatments – she insisted I go.
During the retreat I bonded with a horse named Ganelon. I told him things I’d been holding inside for a long time – things I needed to get off my chest, but had never told another human for fear of being judged. My experience at the farm was so relaxing, suddenly I felt comfortable taking that next step and trying some new things. I forgot there was a whole world outside of my shell. Here is my advice to my fellow veterans – don’t be afraid to take that first step because you won’t regret it. This place works.
Because of financial support from people like you, I was able to experience growth at Quantum Leap Farm. Now I’m asking you to take the first step for the next veteran by giving a gift to Quantum Leap Farm that will benefit veterans like me. Thanks in advance for your kind support on Giving Tuesday.
