Volunteer Job Description

Hours of Operation

Horse-care and administrative duties are performed seven days a week. Office hours are 8:30 am - 4:30 pm with riding sessions scheduled from 9:00 am - Noon, Tuesday through Saturday.

Volunteer Duties

Because we recruit volunteers mostly for help during the times riders are present, volunteers are needed for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings (approximately 4 hours each). None of the activities listed below are particularly strenuous or difficult to learn. We like to alternate activities to increase volunteers' skills and psychological engagement, however volunteers need not be able to perform all activities and most times may choose to perform duties he/she prefers. Volunteer activities include the following:

  1. Sidewalking - walking beside a rider who is mounted, helping to ensure his/her safety and security while in the saddle. Sidewalkers are specially trained to avoid injury in the event of a fall or emergency. Generally, sidewalkers are not asked to walk in excess of two rider sessions a morning and are given breaks between sessions. (A session can consist of a period of time ranging from 15 - 50 minutes.)

  2. Leading - guiding a specially trained horse before, during, and after a rider is mounted, as per the riding instructor's directions. Volunteers undergo training to ensure their comfort and confidence in leading and being around a horse prior to being assigned this duty. Generally, leaders are not asked to lead in excess of two rider sessions a morning and are given breaks between sessions. (A session can consist of a period of time ranging from 15 - 50 minutes.)

  3. Grooming and Tacking Up - includes brushing and preparing the horse and riding equipment for a rider, or taking off tack and caring for the horse after a ride is completed. Special training for this task is also provided.

  4. Miscellaneous duties - barn chores, answering the phone, greeting riders and their companions, preparing riders, tidying up, offering drinks, feeding horses and other animals.
